"Should I feel nervous about it?" he asked softly, trying not to impose too deeply on the silence. The air felt warm and sticky, but at the same time comfortable and refreshing. The horizon was orange, slowly changing from a washed-out red. Just being there made the rest of the world, all the bad things, just disappear and melt into a distant memory. The sun gradually began to peer through the low grey clouds.
"No, don't worry." She breathed "Everything will be okay"
"I am so sorry, I mean..." he apologised weakly.
She took his hand gently and closed her fingers around it. The warmth felt amazing and each of his fingers almost flinched at the touch. It felt beautiful to him, he savoured every moment they had, he wanted the world to stop spinning; he could imagine just lying there so they were together, forever.
"I love you, you know that, yeah?" This was the hundreth time he had said it, but to him it felt like the first, it always would.
She tilted her head slightly as she tried to suppress a smile. The brightness of the sun lit up the pair, making the shadows dissolve as the light flooded through the glass window.
"I know. I love you too..." she paused as they both met each others eyes. Shocking ice blue into hazel brown. Tears burst down her face, leaving pale streaks down each cheek. He lifted his hand slowly and delibrately and wiped them away before leaning his head in closer. "Danny, why can't the whole world be as perfect as you?"
"Ssshhh." he hushed stroking her face with his index finger while his other hand was still in her grasp, fingers locked together. "This is when we can see the beautiful world, we shouldn't question what is happening, we should embrace it. This is the time when I can truly say I am happy of who I am."
"Danny don't say that." she whispered grasping his fingers tighter, he winced slightly. She kissed his cheek tenderly. It felt hot, it wasn't embarressment or even passion, she knew what was happening. "It'll be okay, you'll be alright. Don't worry about a thing."
"It hurts so much!" Danny muttered loudly, drawing a deep breath. His hands twitched as pain seeped through his body. First his chest had sent him into a state of unbearable pain, but now he was lightly sedated he had began to worry about what was happening. After it had happened, he had started shuddering violently as if he was going to explode. But now the pain was sharp and had began to feel bad again. He knew he didn't have long left.
The blood was slowly draining from his face; his eyes glazed over and his skin went white. His hands had started to get clammy, the sweat trapped between their palms. He looked like a spectre, he seemed way too delicate to touch, as if the slightest contact would be enough to shatter him.
"I know baby." she said as once again tears flooded her cheeks. "I don't want you to go..."
"I love you." he interrupted, he took the effort to make each word sound crisp and precise. "And you have to promise me one thing..."
"Anything." she hushed softly, as Danny's eyes began to fill with tears. It wouldn't be long before it happened. His determination had kept his heart beating up until now, but it was getting hard. He just wanted it to end.
"Every morning as you wake up I want you to remember, I need you to remember. I need you to remember what happened, and I need you to know I'm sorry for leaving you. But i'll be there for you, I'll always be watching down on you." He assured her, but avoided her eye. "If it rains on you, I'll shield you from it. If you're crying, I'll be sitting beside you stroking your cheek. If you lose faith in me, I'll cease to exist."
"I will, don't you worry." she sniffed, running her fingers through his soft blonde hair. His chest was slowly moving less, he was falling away from her, she wanted to hold him tight and stop him going.
"I think..." he breathed deeply "I have to go..."
"I love you baby." she whispered to him as his eyes fell shut.He inhaled one last time, the corners of his mouth twitched as if to smile but his lips fell open. Blood trickled from his mouth and his hand fell away from hers. She had been left alone in the big, bad world with no-one.
I wrote this opening as part of my English coursework. The soul purpose is to make you feel intense emotion, I'm happy for any creative direction for the rest of the story.
